How it works
From your postcode to a signed letter in four steps.
- 1
Tell us where you live
Your postcode decides your premium region. That is all we need to start.
- 2
Add what you have
Insurer, deductible and premium from your policy, if you know them. Or skip it.
- 3
Describe a normal year
A few taps about doctor visits and medication. We turn that into an estimate of your bills.
- 4
Switch with one letter
Pick an option and get a cancellation letter ready to sign, plus the dates that matter.
The one thing to understand
A higher deductible is a bet on a healthy year.
Your deductible (called Franchise on Swiss policies) is what you pay yourself each year before the insurance pays. With 2500 you pay less every month, but more when you see a doctor. If your bills stay below the break-even point, you win. Most young people do, yet many stay on 300 because nobody ever did the maths for them.
The worst case is capped by law: at most the deductible plus CHF 700 co-pay per year.
Where you live matters
Same cover, very different prices.
Basic insurance pays for exactly the same treatments everywhere. The premium still depends on your canton and your insurer. Tap a canton.

What you get
Every option ranked by what it costs you, not by the premium.
The cheapest premium is not always the cheapest year. We add the bills you would pay yourself and sort by the total. This example is a 22 year old in Zurich with about CHF 600 in doctor bills.

What is a deductible?
The amount you pay yourself each year before your Krankenkasse pays. On Swiss policies it is called Franchise. You choose between CHF 300, 500, 1000, 1500, 2000 and 2500. Above it you still pay 10% of the bills (Selbstbehalt), up to CHF 700 a year.
Is basic insurance really the same everywhere?
Yes. The law (KVG) fixes what basic insurance covers, so every insurer pays for exactly the same treatments. Only the price, the service and the model rules differ. That is why comparing on price is safe for basic insurance.
Which deductible should I pick?
As a rule of thumb: if your doctor bills stay under about CHF 2,000 a year, the highest deductible (2500) is cheaper over the year. Above that, the lowest (300) wins. The check works out your exact number with your own premiums.
What is the deadline?
To change insurer or lower your deductible, your letter must arrive by 30 November. The BAG recommends sending it by registered mail by 15 November. Raising your deductible is possible until 31 December.
Do I lose my supplementary insurance if I switch?
No. Basic and supplementary insurance are separate contracts. You can move your basic insurance and keep your supplementary insurance where it is. Supplementary insurance has its own notice periods.
Can an insurer refuse me?
Not for basic insurance. Every insurer must accept everyone, regardless of age or health. The only exception: you cannot leave while you have unpaid premiums.
Do I need accident cover?
If you work at least 8 hours a week for one employer, you are already covered for accidents through work and can drop it from your Krankenkasse, which saves a few percent. Students and anyone without such a job need it.
What do you store about me?
Nothing that identifies you. There is no account and no upload. Your name and address for the letter stay in your browser. We only keep anonymous counts, such as how many people finished a check.
I am an international student. Does this apply to me?
If you have Swiss basic insurance (KVG), yes. Most non-EU students at ETH and UZH instead take a student package (Swisscare, Scorestudies, coverio or Academic Care, from CHF 38 a month for Swisscare HMIE with a CHF 2,500 deductible) and get an exemption from the canton, in Zurich through SVA Zürich. EU students can ask the canton whether they can keep their home insurance. These packages run under a different law (VVG) and do not appear here. After your studies you need KVG, and if you work alongside your studies, check with SVA Zürich whether your exemption still applies.
Who are you?
Four students at the University of Zurich, building this for the course Digital Business Innovation. We are not paid by any insurer and do not sell your data.
